The cannabis plant is about so much more than just getting stoned and eating Fritos on the couch, while watching Scooby-Doo reruns. As we continue to research and learn about the plant, we are seeing serious discoveries in science and medicine that directly link the cannabis plant to natural healing properties. This excites most as we are able to change our course of dependency on pharmaceuticals by switching over to all-natural remedies.

So, what are cannabinoids? The cannabinoid is a chemical compound found exclusively in the cannabis plant, that has some healing properties. The cannabis plants consists of cannabinoids and terpenes, which interact with our bodies to help with an array of problems, stemming from physical and mental health issues. This stems from our natural-occurring endocannabinoid system that exists in our bodies. This system interacts directly with cannabis to give us the relief we need for our ailments. And mind you, this is the VERY SHORT of this information (I should come back to this one day)!

Although there are over 100 cannabinoids discovered, the most well known are THC and CBD. THC and CBD are sought after due to the effects after activation (decarboxylation) and have been therapeutic thus far due to its impact on our ailments. I am diving into the world of a lesser known cannabinoid though, and it is CBGa. So why discover this cannabinoid? I am glad you asked!

CBGa is a substantial cannabinoid that occurs in our cultivar That T.O.M. (Time Of the Month). It is substantial to the amount that it has been mentioned by the newest commercial growers that are carrying our genetics. We want to share the wealth of knowledge of why and how this cannabinoid may be helpful to you, or a close family member looking into a different way to care for their health problems.

Molecule for CBGa

The proper name for CBGa is cannabigerolic acid. This cannabinoid is produced by the plant’s trichomes, and allows for maximum energy to be directed to the flowers and plants. This produces better resin and bigger seed yields. No wonder we test high in CBGa! It is a foundational cannabinoid, and is used to produce THCa, CBDa, and CBCa. Over the past 50 years, most research into CBGa had to do with how it ultimately converts into the more prominent cannabinoids that interact with your endocannabinoid system. More recently, CBGa is showing to assist in other ailments, such as inflammation, mood regulation, cancer, and Huntington’s Disease.

CBGa is similar to CBD, in that it does not produce psychoactive effects. The most common effect is an overall sense of calm, and seems to work well for minor anxiety disorders. A current study is being conducted on the use of CBGa to regulate diabetes. This is just the beginning of the exploration of this cannabinoid, and we cannot wait to see how That T.O.M. can continue to help people.

UPDATE 11/11/2021

I recently had the opportunity to learn more about CBG from Dr. Ethan Russo MD, the medical director of Breeder’s Best in California, who is completing extensive studies on cannabinoids. He was nice enough to share more information on the topic for us.

What is Cannabigerol (CBG)?

CBG is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, which has been successful for treating conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, depression, and insomnia. This may be a more sought-out cannabinoid than others that we currently use, in the future ahead of us. During the study, Dr. Russo found that there are limited-to-no withdrawal symptoms, making CBG more attractive to go to market. Patients reported a vast improvement in symptoms of conditions after using CBG regularly. Here is the link for more information, including charts:
